Marissa here. I just wanted to stop by and wish you a happy new year! A lot of amazing things happened last year, and I’m incredibly excited to take those amazing things and implement them even further in the new year.
I realized that I never really introduced myself outside of the blurb in the OC Weekly article, so I thought I would write a blog post introducing myself properly.
I’m a 24 year old art student. I go to Cal State Fullerton, and I’m working on my undergrad (taking my sweet time, I know) in General Studio, and I’ll be starting my Masters in Exhibition Design and Museum Studies in the next year or so.
I took my time working through community college before I transferred so that I could figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I originally was working towards veterinary medicine, but then I took a college level science course and I changed my mind. Many, many art classes later, I was introduced to printmaking and LOVED it. I decided to take an introductory class, and it just confirmed my enthusiasm for the medium. Printmaking is so unique and expansive, and I feel like I’m always learning something new. While my focus is in relief printmaking, I also am proficient in intaglio and screenprinting, and I have experience with letterpress and lithography.
I’ve participated in the Artist Lodge events ever since they started back in April of 2016. I would help out where I could, and Eva and I eventually became friends. In August of 2017 she officially asked me to join the Fan*Alley family as the Artist Lodge Creative Curator.
When I’m not at school or working for Fan*Alley, I run HumAlong Productions where I create and sell my artwork at art shows, conventions, pop-ups, and trade shows. Everything I create, I do in-studio on my own or with the help of family. I do all my own production, prints, and packaging. I am also the gallery assistant at the Artists Republic gallery.
During my free time (…who actually has any of that?) I enjoy reading, cooking, watching movies, and experiencing any and all aspects of live and musical theatre. I love Halloween, Stephen King, Italian food, sushi, the color black, Welcome to Night Vale, My Chemical Romance, comics, and Shakespeare. I’m weird, and awkward, and I’m sorry in advance to any of you that try and have a conversation with me in person.
Some of my absolute favorite artists and creators are: Lindsey Way, Mab Graves, Tara McPherson, Haypeep, Deerjerk, Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon, Kelly Violet, Dennis McNett, Camilla Taylor, Glenn Arthur, Lacey Law, Vincent van Gogh, Rene Magritte, and Edgar Degas.
I think that’s more than enough about me.
I wanted to send my thanks to everybody, friend, family, artist, and attendee that came out and participated in our Artist Lodge events. We wouldn’t be able to put these events together if it weren’t for you. I want to use the Artist Lodge events as a tool to bring together attendees with artists and creative personalities that you may not be able to otherwise interact with. Cons can be expensive and overwhelming places to traverse, and in most situations you don’t always get to meet the creator of the work that you find or fall in love with. I want to make a safe, family friendly, creative space where you can do that, and actually take the time to hold conversations with the artists while building your art collection. I am so, so thankful to Eva for giving me the opportunity to run the Artist Lodge and build up this community.
You can find more of my work via the links below. Feel free to say hello if you see me at a future show! I swear, I don’t bite. I just don’t get out much 🙂
