Our next featured artist is Kyle Barbee of Not a Doll Prints! You may recognize Kyle as a past participant in our Artist Lodge events, especially our Ornamental Oddities galleries where he has created amazing 3D sculpted ornaments of cute little creatures hanging out in their nests for the winter.

What is your favorite medium to work in?
Red and Blue erase pencils
What is your favorite subject matter?
Mermaids and mythological creatures
What art tools do you use, and do you have any tools or brands that you recommend?
I always use red and blue color erase pencils as my main tool and they have to be prismacolor brand pencils.
What sources would you recommend for artists that are interested in pursuing your art medium?
I would recommend “100 Tuesday Tips” by Griz and Norm. You purchase the physical book or find the tips on social media.
How and when did you start creating artwork?
I started creating artwork when I was in middle school after I purchased my first drawing book from a book fair.
Did you go to school for art?
Yes, I went to California State University Fullerton to study animation design.
If you could create anything in the world, what would you create?
I would want to create and in-depth prop design book because they are so few prop design books.
What is your ultimate goal as an artist?
My ultimate goal is to work for a major animation studio and create original animated shows.
Can you tell us a bit about what you’re working on for this show?
I working a number of illustrations based off some Jim Henson projects like The Muppets, Sesame Street and Labyrinth.
What is your favorite Jim Henson film/project/book/etc?
If you could live in any Jim Henson universe, what would it be?
The Muppets world, as long as it’s like the movies.
Who is your favorite Jim Henson character? Why?
Cookie Monster because he is so much fun to draw.
Who would win in a battle, Jareth and his Goblin Army or The Muppets?
Jareth and his Goblin Army (according to my fiancé)
