Everybody wish a warm welcome Kristin! Kristin was supposed to be our Featured Halloween Artist at our in-person event this year, but unfortunately due to COVID-19 we’ve had to postpone. Kristin is a fantastically talented artist and we’re excited to have her back as our featured artist in 2021 with her own solo gallery at our Halloween event!
How old are you?
What is the primary medium you work in?
Fabric & thread
What is your favorite medium to work in?
Fabric/thread and watercolor
What is your favorite subject matter?
Anything related to my favorite fandoms.
What art tools do you use, and do you have any tools or brands that you recommend?
My go-to’s are Dr. Ph. Martin’s watercolors, batik fabrics, Aurifil thread, and of course… my Gingher scissors!
What sources would you recommend for artists that are interested in pursuing your art medium?
I highly recommend the book Photo-Inspired Art Quilts by Leni Levenson Wiener for both technique and overall inspiration.
How and when did you start creating artwork?
I loved drawing and painting at an early age, but it took me YEARS to find my niche. I ended up majoring in graphic design, and I dabbled in craft shows because I enjoyed tactile creations, but I struggled with figuring out who I was as an artist until I discovered the world of art quilting in 2012. This allowed me to blend my love of fabric with fine art sensibilities.
If you could give any advice to your past-artist-self, what would it be?
Believe in what YOU want to create; don’t just stick with what you think others want to see.
If you could create anything in the world, what would you create?
A large art quilt of Notre Dame Cathedral because I absolutely treasure Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I’m not quite ready for this undertaking, but hopefully I will be one day!
What is your ultimate goal as an artist?
It may seem simple, but my main goal is to be viewed and taken seriously as a fine artist even though my medium of choice is a little unconventional.
Are you ready for the Halloween season? Is it your favorite holiday?
YESSS!!! Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays – mainly because it gives me a legitimate excuse to don a costume. Lol
What do you love most about The Haunted Mansion?
I love being transported with the narrative.Who is your favorite Grim Grinning Ghost/room at the Mansion? *The ballroom scene is my favorite hands-down. I’ve always found the ghosts mesmerizing.
The 2003 Haunted Mansion film with Eddie Murphy, yay or nay?
I say “yay” JUST for the opening scene. 🙂
Which is better and why: the traditional Haunted Mansion, or Haunted Mansion Holiday?
Haunted Mansion Holiday is fun, BUT nothing can beat the darker original.
Would you like to share any stories/experiences/special memories that revolve around The Haunted Mansion?
As a kid, I really thought a ghost followed me home EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Would you take a hitchhiking ghost home?
Going back to the previous question, I already thought I did. Lol
Have you participated in the Artist Lodge Gallery before?
Yes! It’s always fun and amazing to be a part of such a great community of artists.
