GALLERY ARTIST INTERVIEW: BARBARA MALLEY

How old are you?
I’m a bicentennial baby!

What is the primary medium you work in?
Pens and Procreate

What is your favorite medium to work in?
PENS!

What is your favorite subject matter?
Whatever catches my eye. 😉

What art tools do you use, and do you have any tools or brands that you recommend?
I love drawing in ink! My favorite pens and markers are Micron 02/03/05/PN, thin-tipped Zebra pens, and Stabilos. When I do use pencils I prefer to use woodless graphite and Derwent Drawing Pencils. I absolutely recommend the Canson 180 sketchbooks. The binding allows the book to open flat which is great for taking pics for Instagram. The paper is high quality too. I can use pen on both sides of the page and nothing bleeds through.

What sources would you recommend for artists that are interested in pursuing your art medium?
“Art and Fear” by David Bayles and Ted Orland and “The War of Art” by Stephen Pressfield are two books I recommend for any creative. They both dig in deep on the reasons why we create and the reasons why we sometimes stop creating. I try to reread both books once a year to give my “art brain” a tune-up.

How and when did you start creating artwork?
According to family lore I started drawing at 2. Allegedly I took crayons at that young age and marked up every wall in the apartment including the sliding glass door.

If you could give any advice to your past-artist-self, what would it be?
Stop overthinking things! You are doing a great job! P.S. Put your brush pens in your carry-on when you fly and not in check-in baggage. That’ll prevent that unfortunate exploding pen incident you had in Minneapolis.

What is your ultimate goal as an artist?
I want to get paid to travel and sketch the cool things I see. I also want an awesome art studio with a gorgeous view, a mini fridge, a giant bean bag, fast wifi, and an excellent sound system

Are you ready for the Halloween season? Is it your favorite holiday?
It’s fun to get free candy from strangers.

What do you love most about The Haunted Mansion?
There’s always something new to see each time you ride.

Who is your favorite Grim Grinning Ghost/room at the Mansion?
The graveyard where everyone is singing and playing instruments.

The 2003 Haunted Mansion film with Eddie Murphy, yay or nay?
I haven’t seen it. 😛

Which is better and why: the traditional Haunted Mansion, or Haunted Mansion Holiday?
Traditional all the way!

Would you like to share any stories/experiences/special memories that revolve around The Haunted Mansion?
I’m always stoked when I get a Doom Buggy all to myself!

Would you take a hitchhiking ghost home?
NOPE!

Have you participated in the Artist Lodge Gallery before?
Yes
