How old are you?
What is the primary medium you work in?
Pen and Ink on paper
What is your favorite medium to work in?
Pen and brush with ink, oil paints and hand built ceramic sculpture! I love both 2D and 3D mediums equally- it works out both parts of my brain. I love being able to combine these when I can.
What is your favorite subject matter?
Bodies, monsters. Anything mad and hairy!
What art tools do you use, and do you have any tools or brands that you recommend?
I primarily use Pigma ink pens alongside the Daiso Japan brand calligraphy ink on Bristol paper.
What sources would you recommend for artists that are interested in pursuing your art medium?
I was self taught so I don’t necessarily have educational sources to share. I’ve learned through experimentation and studying the ink work of Junji Ito, Edward Gorey, Charles Gibson and Francisco de Goya.
How and when did you start creating artwork?
I’ve been making art ever since I was a little kid- it’s always been a helpful way for me to express myself and work through fears. I started to become more serious about art when I was 12 and started visiting a therapist for anxiety issues.
If you could give any advice to your past-artist-self, what would it be?
Yes, your art is weird and that’s OK! Also, wash those brushes.
If you could create anything in the world, what would you create?
I would love to be on a creative team that builds dark rides and experiences.
What is your ultimate goal as an artist?
Sorry if it sounds cheesy but my goal is ultimately one of love. I want to make art that challenges society to re-examine our conflation of conventional beauty with worth- that all bodies are worthy of love, respect and protection.
Are you ready for the Halloween season? Is it your favorite holiday?
I need it to be here already! Even if it won’t look the way it normally does this year, I want to openly celebrate spookiness with my friends and family. I’ve been making a haunted mansion setup at my parent’s house since 2010. I’ve made master copies of the paintings and sculpted props and recreated some audio and visual effects. It’s my longest running project and it gets new additions every year! Believe it or not it isn’t my favorite holiday but a close 2nd… Christmas takes the cake only because I find it to actually be spookier. We can argue about why that is.
What do you love most about The Haunted Mansion?
My obsession with the Haunted Mansion began with my initial terrible fear of it. I’m a huge weenie and refused willingly go on the ride until I was 13. Even though the ride was supposed to be equal parts humor and horror I only focused on the scary parts. I have masochistic tendencies so at that point I gained a morbid curiosity about what it was that bothered me about it and made myself watch ride-throughs on YouTube and delve into the LongForgotten blog. That fascination led to a period of fan art that started in my teens and continues today. The Haunted Mansion was my first tangible moment of overcoming something that really scared me, and I have loved it ever since.
Who is your favorite Grim Grinning Ghost/room at the Mansion?
The ballroom scene is incredible- there is so much detail that I feel like I never get to spend enough time in there.
The 2003 Haunted Mansion film with Eddie Murphy, yay or nay?
All I can hear is “For Evers and Evers…”
Which is better and why: the traditional Haunted Mansion, or Haunted Mansion Holiday?
Unpopular opinion: they’re both fun and people who hate HMH are boring.
Would you like to share any stories/experiences/special memories that revolve around The Haunted Mansion?
Ooo the first time I was able to see the new Hatbox Ghost animatronic our Doombuggy paused in front of him for a good two minutes. The effect worked great!
Would you take a hitchhiking ghost home?
We have a choice?
Have you participated in the Artist Lodge Gallery before?
This is my first time! I’m so happy to be involved! My 16 year old self of my past would be very pleased to know that I’m involved in this particular show.
