GALLERY ARTIST INTERVIEW: MARGRET LOVE OF MAGGIE LOVE WAS HERE

How old are you?
37

What is the primary medium you work in?
I primarily work in traditional mediums. I prefer use acryl gouache, gouache, or pencils.

What is your favorite medium to work in?
Acryl gouache. Holbein is my brand of choice, though Turner has an excellent premixed color selection.

What is your favorite subject matter?
I like to play in a spooky sandbox. Vintage halloween, classic horror films, pulp pinups, you name it.

What art tools do you use, and do you have any tools or brands that you recommend?
I’m flexible on what watercolor paper I use, but I’m a diehard fan of Trekell brushes. If you use cleaner and restorer on them, they’ll hold their shape for quite some time. For acryl gouache, Holbein is my brand of choice, though Turner has an excellent premixed color selection.

What sources would you recommend for artists that are interested in pursuing your art medium?
Acryl gouache isn’t as popular as other mediums, such as oil or acrylics, but there are some great tutorials on YouTube. It is a very difficult medium to work with, you will need to practice a lot, but keep at it!

How and when did you start creating artwork?
I’ve been creating since I was little, and this naturally flowed into working as a tattoo artist in my early twenties. I transitioned out of the industry a few years ago into illustration.

If you could give any advice to your past-artist-self, what would it be?
Stop comparing yourself to others, and start comparing where you are now versus where you have been.

If you could create anything in the world, what would you create?
I’ve been dying to do a tarot deck, but that’s a commitment that has got to wait.

What is your ultimate goal as an artist?
I want to be able to sustain a solo show at a lowbrow gallery.

Are you ready for the Halloween season? Is it your favorite holiday?
I’m always ready! We’re the household that only took the skeleton off the porch after two years because he was sun damaged. We replaced them immediately.

What do you love most about The Haunted Mansion?
Its immersive nature. I love feeling like I’ve left everything behind hand am being transported through a cohesive, scary story.

Who is your favorite Grim Grinning Ghost/room at the Mansion?
Constance Hatchaway, of course!

The 2003 Haunted Mansion film with Eddie Murphy, yay or nay?
Nay. Great cast, disjointed writing.

Which is better and why: the traditional Haunted Mansion, or Haunted Mansion Holiday?
Traditional Haunted Mansion. While it’s a lot of fun to see how they decorate for the holiday, the traditional decor is an original property whereas the overlay isn’t.

Would you like to share any stories/experiences/special memories that revolve around The Haunted Mansion?
I had a first date at Disneyland when I was 21. I’d only lived in California for about a year at that time, so it was only my second time going to the park. One of the last rides we went on was the Haunted Mansion, by that time the butterflies had settled a bit and we were comfortable with each other. Holding hands in the dark, jumping and giggling at the rattling doors and lightning, I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Would you take a hitchhiking ghost home?
Only if they promise to pitch in with chores.

Have you participated in the Artist Lodge Gallery before?
Yes, this is my fourth Halloween show with the Artist Lodge.
