GALLERY ARTIST INTERVIEW: POPCUTOUTS

How old are you?
34

What is the primary medium you work in?
Paper cutouts

What is your favorite medium to work in?
Paper cutouts

What is your favorite subject matter?
I love to do illustrations of birds, pinups, tiki, and anything Disney!

What art tools do you use, and do you have any tools or brands that you recommend?
I can’t do anything without a mechanical pencil, a good eraser, a craft knife and a self healing cutting mat. My favorite craft knife is an Ergo Kiwi because it’s the only knife that doesn’t kill my hands after hours of working with it!

How and when did you start creating artwork?
I’ve been creating art for as long as I can remember. I went to CalArts for their Character Animation program and that is where I started working a lot in paper cutouts.

If you could give any advice to your past-artist-self, what would it be?
Keep working! You won’t like a lot of the stuff you create, but you need to keep pushing forward and making things.

If you could create anything in the world, what would you create?
I’d love to make super elaborate, huge cutout. Most of my work is smaller, around 8×10 or 11×14, and I’d love to make an intricate poster-sized cutout.

What is your ultimate goal as an artist?
My ultimate goal as an artist is to illustrate a children’s book. Growing up, reading was a huge part of my childhood and now that I have kids one of my favorite things is to cuddle up with them with a good book. I’d love to one day be able to read to them a book that has my cutouts in it.

Are you ready for the Halloween season? Is it your favorite holiday?
Halloween is definitely a favorite in our house. I have two little boys who are very excited to start decorating and carve pumpkins.

What do you love most about The Haunted Mansion?
The Haunted Mansion is one of my earliest Disneyland memories. I remember sitting in a doom buggy with my mom and being fascinated by the dancing ghosts in the ballroom. It’s still one of my favorite rides!

Who is your favorite Grim Grinning Ghost/room at the Mansion?
My two favorite rooms are Madame Leota’s seance room and the ballroom.

The 2003 Haunted Mansion film with Eddie Murphy, yay or nay?
I’ve never seen it!

Which is better and why: the traditional Haunted Mansion, or Haunted Mansion Holiday?
Haunted Mansion Holiday is a lot of fun, but I’m a traditionalist and will go with original Haunted Mansion.

Would you like to share any stories/experiences/special memories that revolve around The Haunted Mansion?
One of the first times my oldest son went on the ride, he was scared of how dark it was. So I loudly sang along to the song and had him giggling by the time the ride was over.

Would you take a hitchhiking ghost home?
Only if he does dishes!

Have you participated in the Artist Lodge Gallery before?
No, this is my first time.

Where can readers find your work?
