How old are you?
What is the primary medium you work in?
I usually work digitally, but thanks to covid I’ve been able to go back to my roots or painting with gouache and experimenting with new mediums like polymer clay and embroidery!
What is your favorite medium to work in?
I love gouache and how depending on the technique you use you can create flat blocks of color or amazing textures with the brush! Lucky for me I can still us gouache brushes even when I am painting digitally thanks to custom brushes.
What is your favorite subject matter?
Lots of things inspire me, I’m constantly looking around the world and being inspired. I am often draw to the more fantasy and fairytale subject matters, like mermaids, fairies and centaurs.
What art tools do you use, and do you have any tools or brands that you recommend?
I used my iPad pro and the app procreate to create my piece for the Flora and Fauna gallery but you don’t need anything fancy to create art! I started out my digital art journey using MS paint!!
What sources would you recommend for artists that are interested in pursuing your art medium?
With the internet you have access to so many tutorials, I can’t begin to name which one I would recommend. I would suggest doing master studies of artwork you are drawn to or like, figure out what it is you do like about it. I took a class during college about using traditional techniques for digital painting, if anything I would recommended finding a class like that online!
How and when did you start creating artwork?
I’ve been lucky to have parents who always supported my interest in art, so I’ve been doing something creative most of my life wither it was drawing, dancing or pottery.
Who or what are your biggest artistic influences?
Mary Blair, Brittney lee and the greatest artist of them all, nature.
What piece of art do you most closely identify with?
I’m working on creating graphic novels/comics based on stories I’ve been developing through the years. I identify with these the most because I’ve been able to draw inspiration from my own life for the main characters and how there are no limitations on our destiny based on what we think we can do. I cant wait to share their stories with you.
If you could give any advice to your past-artist-self, what would it be?
Keep drawing!! fill a sketchbook after sketchbook with good and bad drawings, not everything needs to be perfect and sometimes you just really need to draw some good ol dumb doodles (like a sea urchin in a cowboy hat)
What is your absolute dream project? If you could create anything in the world, what would you create?
My BIG dream is currently creating my own tv show based off of one of my ideas but for now I’ve set my set on creating a graphic novel/ comic.
What is your ultimate goal as an artist? Has this changed over your art career?
Creating is a journey, I started out thinking I wanted to animate, then character design, then storyboarding and I’m currently working on background painting. The key is to keep growing and evolving.
What is your favorite plant and/or animal?
Oh a tough one, can I say my dog Ragu? No? Ok if I do have to choose then it would be a harbor seal. I can’t look at them without smiling, instant mood boost.
Is nature something that you’re drawn to?
Yes! The natural shapes that are created, the colors, its all just *chiefs kiss* so great.
Can you tell us about the pieces you created for this gallery?
I had so many ideas for the theme for the gallery but my mind kept circling around to this one idea of how forest spirts or guardians are usually depicted as beautiful lush creatures. So I started playing around with the idea of a forest sprit of mushrooms, which are usually seen as things of decay.
Are there any messages that you’re aiming to convey with the art you created for this gallery?
That all types of nature are beautiful, even tiny little mushrooms.
If you could invent any kind of plant or animal, what would it be/look like/what kind of environment would it thrive in?
I would want more creatures like hermit crabs that have attached various plant life to their shells (this was my inspiration for my mushroom deer).
Have you participated in the Artist Lodge Gallery before?
No, this is my first time and I feel so honored to be with an amazing group of artist.
