GALLERY ARTIST INTERVIEW: SARUMATHY SS

How old are you?
28

What is your favorite medium to work in?
At the moment, it’s a tie between watercolors and acrylics.

What is your favorite subject matter?
I like creating art that tells little stories, depicts connection and has a little bit of magic.

What art tools do you use, and do you have any tools or brands that you recommend?
For this show, I used Sennelier watercolors and Raphael brushes on Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper. They work really well together.

How and when did you start creating artwork?
I’ve been creating art for as long as I can remember.

Who or what are your biggest artistic influences?
Growing up, my mom’s beautiful paintings and my grandma’s gorgeous sketches were my biggest artistic influences. Today, I’m inspired by artists like Tanya Shatseva, Lindsay Rapp, McKenzie Fisk, Naomi Vandoren and Emily Jeffords.

What is your favorite plant and/or animal?
My favorite animal would have to be my dog, Murph. He’s the absolute best. As for plants, I really don’t think I could pick! Right now, I have my eye on both peonies and Monstera. I’d love to add them to our little plant collection.

Is nature something that you’re drawn to?
Oh my gosh – yes! I find nature both inspiring and reinvigorating. I love hikes with off beaten trails, sunsets, oceans, mountains, autumns and winters.

Can you tell us about the pieces you created for this gallery?
A sub-theme across the paintings I created for this show is ‘connection’. ‘Imprint’ is inspired by stories of ducks and geese that imprint on humans. I find that incredibly cute. ‘Purple Lullaby’ is inspired by harvest mice that are sometimes found asleep inside tulips. ‘Guided by Constellations’ draws on the feeling of comfort that comes with memories of people who aren’t physically around you. ‘Dandelion Corner’ is inspired by plants that add a bit of magic to our yards and homes. ‘Roots’ symbolizes living together in harmony and being a little bit more in touch with our environment.

Are there any messages that you’re aiming to convey with the art you created for this gallery?
‘Dandelion Corner’ is also about supporting local business, being responsible and taking measures to slow the spread and making room for nature in our lives.

If you could invent any kind of plant or animal, what would it be/look like/what kind of environment would it thrive in?
I would love for dragons to be real. Growing up, I really wanted to be a dragon rider.

Have you participated in the Artist Lodge Gallery before?
No
