GALLERY ARTIST INTERVIEW: Koko Yang

What is the primary medium you work in?
I work digitally mostly.

What is your favorite medium to work in?
My favourite drawing softwares are Procreate and Photoshop!

What is one medium that you would love to learn?
I’ve always want to learn to use clay better. Love how organic it is and its texture. I’m practising on my own time. Hope to get better soon.

What is your favorite subject matter?
I love EVERYTHING about people and their stories. Drawing from life is my biggest inspiration. On the other hand, graphic design is something I’m new to and I’ve been having fun with. It takes my stress away and I like to use shapes to describe an object or a feeling.

Can you tell us about your art style/company/brand?
My art style has a big range. It goes from cartoony to whimsy, cool stuff and also I love comic and manga! It changes depends on the project I’m working on.

What art tools do you use, and do you have any tools or brands that you recommend?
I mostly use Wacom Cintiq for environment painting and character art. But I also love drawing on procreate with ipad. I’ve been really enjoying its organic brush and simple layout.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what are the three art supply items that you would have with you?
Ipad, pencil and paper!

What sources would you recommend for artists that are interested in pursuing your art medium?
There are many amazing online courses like Schoolism and The Animation Collaborative. They have classes of different levels so it’s suitable for all people.

How and when did you start creating artwork?
I’ve been drawing or doodling ever since I was a kid! But I only receive actual proper training when I was in high school. And that’s also when I figured out more about what I want to draw.

Who or what are your biggest artistic influences?
So many!! But artists like Chris Sasaki, Willie Real and Alice Lemma gave me countless inspirations!

If you could time travel to experience any art movement firsthand, what would it be and why?
I’d love to visit Spain! Their bold architecture is mind-blowing.

If you could give any advice to your past-artist-self, what would it be?
That would be don’t be afraid to make mistakes or explore your artistic potential! Nothing can be perfect and life is limited. I wish I could have more courage to just draw or make things with a simple mind and have fun with it. There’s no correct answer and I think I should try to experience different medium and worry less about how it turns out.

What is your absolute dream project? If you could create anything in the world, what would you create?
I’m currently working on a dream project and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!! All of the past projects I’ve worked on are so cool and unique. I feel extremely lucky to be a part of them. And in the future I would also love to work on a project more rooted in my own culture!

Can you tell us about the pieces you created for this gallery?
It’s a piece where the brother and sister explore unknown spirit and also receive healing from the event.

Are there any messages that you’re aiming to convey with the art you created for this gallery?
Love is always there for you in your heart and by your side. And don’t be afraid to be you because you are one of a kind!

Would you like to share any stories/experiences/special memories that revolve around the theme of this gallery?
I’ve played this game with my friend when I was in high school. I sort of felt the pull was from my friend but she said she didn’t do anything!! It’s so crazy and magical.

Can you tell us about some of the other artwork/products you will have available during the gallery run?
I have some art pieces about friendship and exploring different places. It’s always a favourite topic for me and I’d love to draw these sweet moments.

Have you ever used a Ouija board? If so can you tell us about that experience?
Yes and it was very fun!! Although I still couldn’t 100% believe it because the answer is so true!!

If you could use a Ouija board to speak to someone (anyone from your past or anyone that has ever existed), who would you speak to and why?
My maternal grandmother who passed away two years ago. She was a strong woman and very dear to me. I love her to the eternity.

If you were a ghost would you prank people using Ouija boards and how would you do so?
Yes but only in the beginning haha! I’d really love to help them with my answers.

Is Halloween your favorite holiday?
It’s my favourite for sure since I get to see so many cool people’s crafting!

What is your favorite thing to do during the fall?
I’d love to eat hotpot haha and take a walk on the road of red leaves.

Do you have any Fall/Halloween recommendations?
Coraline for Laika Studio! Actually all the films from Laika.

Have you participated in the Artist Lodge Gallery before?
No this is my first time.
